Detailed trim and cabinetry finishing by True North Craftsmen

What we do

A canvas, thoughtfully finished.

Trim is where finish work earns its name. The detail no one notices on the wall is the detail everyone notices on the casing. The joint at the crown molding, the line where the base meets the wall, the bead on the cabinet door, the way the paint sits inside the panel of a wainscot. If those are right, the room reads as finished. If they are not, no amount of wall color fixes it.

We caulk the seam. We fill the nail hole. We sand the edge so it is smooth, not just covered. Then we lay the paint down with the right tool for the profile: a brush for the inside corner, a sprayer for the door panel, a roller for the long flat. The trim looks like furniture when we are done because we treat it like furniture while we are doing it.

Crown molding gets a longer time horizon than people expect. Base moldings get a topcoat that can take a vacuum cleaner. Door and window casings get the same product as the doors so the paint reads as one piece. Built-in bookshelves get spray finishes on the panels and brush finishes on the trim so the texture difference reads in person.

If your house has the trim and we are finishing it, we treat it the way the carpenter would have if he had finished it himself.

Materials and process

Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim. This is the product. It dries hard, it flows out flat, it holds up to fingertips and vacuum cleaners and Hamilton County humidity. Inside corners get brushed. Long flats get sprayed.

Prep first. Sand the existing finish. Caulk every seam. Fill every nail hole. Prime where bare wood shows. The trim feels right under your hand before it ever sees paint.

Brush, spray, or both. Doors and panels get sprayed for flow-out. Crown and base get brushed for cut lines. Built-ins get both. The tool is matched to the profile, not the schedule.

Frequently asked

Common questions, plain answers.

What trim and millwork do you paint?

Baseboards, door and window casing, crown molding, wainscoting, chair rail, stair railings, mantels, and built-ins. Trim is where a paint job is judged up close, so it gets the most careful prep and the steadiest hand on the crew.

What makes trim paint hold up better?

Surface prep and the right product. Trim gets cleaned, sanded, filled, caulked, and primed where needed, then finished in Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane, which levels smooth and stands up to being touched, bumped, and cleaned. The prep is what keeps the lines crisp and the finish from chipping.

Can you match or update my existing trim color?

Yes. We can match your current trim, brighten it to a cleaner white, or shift the whole home to a new trim color. Taylor brings samples to the estimate so you can see the options against your walls and floors before anything is painted.

Do you repair damaged trim before painting?

We fill dents, re-caulk separated joints, and address minor damage as part of prep. For boards that are rotted or badly broken we will flag them during the estimate and talk through replacement so the finish has something sound to sit on.

Is trim work quoted in writing?

Yes. Taylor walks the rooms, counts the work, and writes an itemized estimate the same business day. The estimate matches the invoice, and the crew that quotes it is the crew that does it.
